Verkadalai Podi / Peanut Powder

This podi or masala powder is a very good accompaniment for dosa ,idli,adai ,chapati etc or simply can be mixed with piping hot rice and ghee.
This masala powder can be used to enhance the flavor of potato / plantain(vazhakaai) sabji or any tuber vegetable dry stir fry.

Preparation Time : 10 mins

Ingredients

1 cup peanuts
1/4 cup channa dhall/bengal gram dhall
7-8 dry red chillies (spicy variety)
7-8 byadgi chillies (for color) -(optional)
tiny ball of tamarind
jaggery - small piece
salt
pinch of hing/asafoetida

Method

  • In a skillet heat a little oil.
  • Roast the peanuts until crisp and keep aside.
  • Roast the channa dhall until golden brown. Take care not to burn them.
  • Roast the dry red chillies until the pungency is lost and they are lightly crisp.
  • Mix all these and cool for about 10 - 15 mins
  • Blend into a coarse powder by adding,salt,jaggery and tamarind and hing.
  • Check the salt and add if needed.
